ⲁⲡⲁ SBF nn m, title of reverence, corresponding to ἀββᾶς (as in Apophthegmata, BM 216 S, 915 B) & mostly in B to ⲁⲃⲃⲁ; in Arabic to ابا (constantly with certain names: Hôr: PO 3 370, ib 10 255 &c, Kâu: PO 11 736, 10 264), while ⲁⲃⲃⲁ commonly = انبا (for pronunc. of this cf Leyd 428 ⲁⲛⲃⲁ, C 89 43 ⲁⲙⲡⲁ, EW 237, 242, 245 ⲙⲡⲁ, ⲉⲙⲡⲁ, ⲉⲛⲡⲁ), both eventually represented by بو، ابو (often in Synax), which in later S = ⲁⲡⲟⲩ: J 91 21, BM 535, 545, 602, while ⲁ. ⲁⲡⲧⲉⲗⲗ(ⲁ) BM 1231, ⲁ. ⲁⲙⲣⲟⲩ Bodl(P) d 20 is for ابو. By crasis: ⲁⲡⲁⲅⲁⲑⲉ (AM 31), ⲁⲡⲁⲡⲟⲗⲓ, ⲁⲡⲁⲣⲓ, ⲁⲡⲁⲙⲟⲩⲛ, ⲁⲡⲁⲛⲟⲩⲃ; or by elision: ⲡⲁⲕⲓⲣⲉ, ⲡⲁⲙⲟⲩⲛ; further ⲁⲡⲁⲧⲏⲣ, rarely (Leyd 212 S, BMis 14 S) = ⲁⲡⲁ ⲡⲁⲧⲏⲣ. With names of certain martyrs ⲁ. coalesces: ⲁ. ⲃⲓⲕⲧⲱⲣ, ⲁ. ⲇⲓⲟⲥ, ⲁ. ⲙⲏⲛⲁ, ⲁ. ⲕⲗⲁⲩⲧⲉ, ⲁ. ⲕⲩⲣⲟⲥ (cf ST 319 S ⲁⲃⲃⲁ ⲕⲩⲣⲓ); cf also ⲁⲃⲃⲁ ⲁ. ⲉⲡⲓⲙⲁ Mor 45 56 S. Both ⲁ. & ⲁⲃⲃⲁ often applied to one person in same B MS: HL 92, 94, 103 B Pamô, Va 62 147, 149 John of Siût, Miss 4 119, 158 Macarius of Tkôw, AM 225, 233 Macrobius, EW 139 Samuel (cf Ep 144 n); or in different MSS: Miss 4 5, 110, MIE 2 373, DeV 76 Shenoute, C 86 73 n Isaac. ⲁ. in B Acta not confined to S saints: Sarapion, Til, Anoub in C 43 are all from Delta; but never used in B of archbishops, bishops: Athanasius, Dioscorus, Benjamin &c always ⲁⲃⲃⲁ, which also in S is more ceremonious. Applied to biblical persons (cf PG 65 116 ἀββᾶ Ἰακώβ): ST 162 S, RE 14 30 S prophets, BM 309 S apostle Peter, BM 1117 S angels; to non-clerical martyrs: Justus, Isidore, Victor, Claudius. ⲁ. alone, without name, reserved for certain venerated persons: Pachôm esp (v TT 187 n) Mor 51 33 S ϩⲙⲡⲉⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ ⲛⲁ., ib 37 ⲛⲉⲛⲧⲟⲗⲏ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲛⲁ. Often forms names borne by laymen: MR 5 31 ⲁ. ⲙⲁⲣⲕⲟⲥ, PLond 4 511 ⲁ. ⲉⲡⲓⲙⲁⲭⲟⲥ pagarchs, MR 2 65 ⲁ. ⲍⲁⲭⲁⲣⲓⲁⲥ chartulary; cf PLond 4 541, Wess 8 287.
