Wisdom of Jesus son of Sirach 34

(ⲁ︦) ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲧⲟⲩϣⲏ ⲛ̅ⲣⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣⲙ̅ⲙⲁⲟ ⲃⲱⲗ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛ̅ⲛⲉϥⲥⲁⲣⲝ̅ ⲁⲩⲱ ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲡⲉϥⲣⲟⲟⲩϣ ⲥⲁϩⲉ ⲫⲓⲛⲏⲃ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙ̅ⲙⲟϥ. (1) Watching for riches consumeth the flesh, and the care thereof driveth away sleep.
(ⲃ︦) ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲡⲣⲟⲟⲩϣ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲟⲩϣⲏ ⲛ̅ⲣⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲁⲡⲁⲓⲧⲓ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲣⲉⲕⲣⲓⲕⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲟⲩϩⲓⲛⲏⲃ ⲧⲁⲗϭⲉ ⲟⲩϣⲱⲛⲉ ⲉϥⲛⲁϣⲧ̅. (2) Watching care will not let a man slumber, as a sore disease breaketh sleep,
(ⲅ︦) ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲡⲣⲙ̅ⲙⲁⲟ ϩⲓⲥⲉ ⲉϥⲥⲱⲟⲩϩ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲛ̅ⲛⲉϥⲭⲣⲏⲙⲁ ⲁⲩⲱ ϣⲁϥⲥⲉⲓ ⲛ̅ⲛⲉϥⲧⲣⲩⲫⲏ ϩⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲙⲟⲧⲛⲉⲥ. (3) The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together; and when he resteth, he is filled with his delicates.
(ⲇ︦) ⲁⲩⲱ ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲫⲏⲕⲉ ϩⲓⲥⲉ ϩⲙ̅ ⲡϣⲱⲱⲧ ⲙ̅ⲡⲉϥⲁϩⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ϣⲁϥⲣ̅ϭⲣⲱϩ ϩⲛ̅ ⲧⲙⲟⲧⲛⲉⲥ. (4) The poor laboureth in his poor estate; and when he leaveth off, he is still needy.
(ⲉ︦) ⲡⲉⲧⲙⲉ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲛⲟⲩⲃ ϥⲛⲁⲧⲙⲁⲓ̈ⲟ ⲁⲛ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉⲧⲡⲏⲧ ⲛ̅ⲥⲱϥ ⲛⲁⲙⲟⲩϩ ... ⲉⲩⲧⲁⲕⲟ ⲛⲁϥ. (5) He that loveth gold shall not be justified, and he that followeth corruption shall have enough thereof.
(ⲋ︦) ⲁ ϩⲁϩ ⲅⲁⲣ ϩⲉ ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲡⲛⲟⲩⲃ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁ ⲡⲉⲩⲧⲁⲕⲟ ϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲉⲩⲙ̅ⲧⲟ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ. (6) Gold hath been the ruin of many, and their destruction was present.
(ⲍ︦) ⲟⲩϣⲉ ⲛ̅ϫⲣⲟⲡ ⲡⲉ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲉⲧϣⲙ̅ϣⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲣⲉ ⲁⲑⲏⲧ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲛⲁⲧⲁⲕⲟ ⲛ̅ϩⲏⲧϥ̅. (7) It is a stumblingblock unto them that sacrifice unto it, and every fool shall be taken therewith.
(ⲏ︦) ⲛⲁⲓ̈ⲁⲧϥ̅ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣⲙ̅ⲙⲁⲟ ⲉⲛⲧⲁⲩϩⲉ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲉϥⲟⲩⲁⲁⲃ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲡⲉⲧⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡϥ̅ⲟⲩⲁϩϥ ⲛ̅ⲥⲁ ⲟⲩⲛⲟⲩⲃ. (8) Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, and hath not gone after gold.
(ⲑ︦) ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉ; ⲧⲁⲣⲛ̅ⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲍⲉ ⲙ̅ⲙⲟϥ: ⲁϥⲣ̅ ϩⲛ̅ϣⲡⲏⲣⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ ϩⲙ̅ ⲡⲉϥⲗⲁⲟⲥ. (9) Who is he? and we will call him blessed: for wonderful things hath he done among his people.
(ⲓ︦) ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁⲩⲇⲟⲕⲓⲙⲁⲍⲉ ⲙ̅ⲙⲟϥ ⲛ̅ϩⲏⲧϥ̅ ⲁϥϫⲱⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲧⲁⲣⲉϥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉⲩϣⲟⲩϣⲟⲩ. (10) Who hath been tried thereby, and found perfect? then let him glory.
(ⲓ︦ⲁ︦) ⲛⲓⲙ ⲡⲉⲧⲉ ⲟⲩⲛ̅ϣϭⲟⲙ ⲙ̅ⲙⲟϥ ⲉⲡⲁⲣⲁⲃⲁ ⲉⲙⲡϥ̅ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲃⲁ; ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲣⲡⲉⲑⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲙⲡϥ̅ⲉⲓⲣⲉ; Who might offend, and hath not offended? or done evil, and hath not done it?
(ⲓ︦ⲃ︦) ⲛⲉϥⲁⲅⲁⲑⲟⲛ ⲛⲁⲧⲁϫⲣⲟ ⲡⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲟⲩⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲉⲕⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲛⲁϫⲱ ⲛ̅ⲧⲉϥⲙⲛ̅ⲧⲛⲁ. (11) His goods shall be established, and the congregation shall declare his alms.
(ⲓ︦ⲅ︦) ⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉⲕϣⲁⲛϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ϩⲓ ⲟⲩⲛⲟϭ ⲛ̅ⲧⲣⲁⲡⲉⲍⲁ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲟⲩⲏⲛ ⲛ̅ⲣⲱⲕ ⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ϫⲟⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛ̅ ϩⲁϩ ϩⲓⲱⲱⲥ. (12) If thou sit at a bountiful table, be not greedy upon it, and say not, There is much meat on it.
(ⲓ︦ⲇ︦) ..... ϫⲉ ⲡⲃⲁⲗ ⲙ̅ⲡⲟⲛⲏⲣⲟⲥ ϩⲟⲟⲩ: [ⲁⲩ]ⲱ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉⲧⲥⲟⲛⲧ̅ ⲉϥϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲉⲡⲃⲁⲗ; (13) Remember that a wicked eye is an evil thing: and what is created more wicked than an eye? therefore it weepeth upon every occasion.
(ⲓ︦ⲉ︦) ...ⲣⲟϥ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲥⲟⲩⲧⲛ̅ ⲧⲟⲟⲧⲕ̅ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ϩⲉϫϫ ⲧⲉⲕϭⲓϫ ⲉⲧϫⲏ ⲛⲉⲙⲁϥ. (14) Stretch not thine hand whithersoever it looketh, and thrust it not with him into the dish. (15) Judge not thy neighbour by thyself:
(ⲓ︦ⲋ︦) ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙⲉⲕⲙⲟⲩⲕⲕ̅ ⲉϫⲛ̅ ϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲓⲙ. and be discreet in every point.
(ⲓ︦ⲍ︦) ⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲛ̅ⲑⲉ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛ̅ⲛⲉⲧϩⲁⲣⲟⲕ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲧⲁⲡⲧ̅ ⲣⲱⲕ ⲙⲏⲡⲟⲧⲉ ⲛ̅ⲥⲉⲙⲉⲥⲧⲱⲕ. (16) Eat as it becometh a man, those things which are set before thee; and devour note, lest thou be hated.
(ⲓ︦ⲏ︦) ⲉⲧⲃⲉ ⲧⲉⲥⲃⲱ ⲕⲁ ⲧⲟⲟⲧⲕ̅ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛ̅ϣⲟⲣⲡ̅ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲣ̅ⲁⲧⲥⲉⲓ ⲙⲏⲡⲟⲧⲉ ⲛⲅ̅ϫⲱⲣⲡ̅. (17) Leave off first for manners’ sake; and be not unsatiable, lest thou offend.
(ⲓ︦ⲑ︦) ⲉⲕϣⲁⲛϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ϩⲛ̅ ⲧⲙⲏⲧⲉ ⲛ̅ϩⲛ̅ⲙⲏⲏϣⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲥⲟⲩⲧⲛ̅ ⲧⲟⲟⲧⲕ̅ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲁ ⲧⲉⲩϩⲏ. (18) When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all.
(ⲕ︦) ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲛⲁⲛⲟⲩ ⲡⲣⲱϣⲉ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲉϥⲧⲥⲁⲃⲏⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙⲉϥϫⲗ̅ϩⲏⲥ ⲡⲉ ϩⲓ ⲡⲉϥϭⲗⲟϭ. (19) A very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured, and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed.
(ⲕ︦ⲁ︦) ϣⲁⲕⲱⲃϣ̅ ⲉⲕⲙⲟⲧⲛ̅ ⲉⲕϣⲁⲛⲣ̅ ⲡⲣⲱϣⲉ: ϣⲁⲕⲧⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⲉϩⲧⲟⲟⲩⲉ ⲉⲣⲉ ⲡⲉⲕϩⲏⲧ ⲙ̅ⲙⲟⲕ. (20) Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating: he riseth early, and his wits are with him:
(ⲕ︦ⲃ︦) ⲉⲣⲉ ⲟⲩⲙ̅ⲕⲁϩ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩϣⲏ ⲛ̅ⲣⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲙⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲭⲟⲗⲏ ⲙⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲟⲣⲅⲏ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛ̅ⲁⲧⲥⲉⲓ. but the pain of watching, and choler, and pangs of the belly, are with an unsatiable man.
(ⲕ︦ⲅ︦) ⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲕϫⲓ ..ϭⲓⲛⲟⲩⲱⲙ ⲧⲱⲟⲩⲛ ⲛⲅ̅ⲕⲁ ⲃⲟⲗ ⲛⲅ̅ⲙ̅ⲧⲟⲛ .... (21) And if thou hast been forced to eat, arise, go forth, vomit, and thou shalt have rest.
(ⲕ︦ⲇ︦) ⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲉⲣⲟⲓ̈ ⲡⲁϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲛⲅ̅ⲧⲙ̅ⲥⲟϣ .... ⲁⲩⲱ ⲕⲛⲁϩⲉ ⲉⲛⲁϣⲁϫⲉ ϩⲛ̅ ⲑⲁⲏ ⲡⲉ. (22) My son, hear me, and despise me not, and at the last thou shalt find as I told thee:
(ⲕ︦ⲉ︦) ϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉⲕⲛⲁϣⲧ̅ ϩⲛ̅ ⲛⲉⲕϣⲁϫⲉ ⲧⲏⲣⲟⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙⲛ̅ ⲗⲁⲁⲩ ⲛ̅ϣⲱⲛⲉ ⲛⲁⲧⲱⲙⲛ̅ⲧ ⲉⲣⲟⲕ ⲡⲉ. in all thy works be quick, so shall there no sickness come unto thee.
(ⲕ︦ⲋ︦) ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲛⲉⲥⲡⲟⲧⲟⲩ ⲥⲙⲟⲩ ⲉⲡⲉⲧⲣⲟⲟⲩⲧ ⲉϫⲛ̅ ⲡⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲧⲙⲛ̅ⲧⲙⲛ̅ⲧⲣⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲉϥⲁⲛⲁⲓ̈ ⲛ̅ϩⲟⲧ. (23) Whoso is liberal of his meat, men shall speak well of him; and the report of his good housekeeping will be believed.
(ⲕ︦ⲍ︦) ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲟⲩⲡⲟⲗⲓⲥ ⲕⲣⲙ̅ⲣⲙ̅ ⲉⲩⲡⲟⲛⲏⲣⲟⲥ ⲉϫⲛ̅ ⲡⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲧⲙⲛ̅ⲧⲙⲛ̅ⲧⲣⲉ ⲛ̅ⲧⲉϥⲡⲟⲛⲏⲣⲓⲁ ⲟⲣϫ̅. (24) But against him that is a niggard of his meat the whole city shall murmur; and the testimonies of his niggardness shall not be doubted of.
(ⲕ︦ⲏ︦) ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲣ̅ⲥⲁⲩⲏⲣⲡ̅: ⲁ ⲏⲣⲡ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲧⲁⲕⲉ ϩⲁϩ. (25) Shew not thy valiantness in wine; for wine hath destroyed many.
(ⲕ︦ⲑ︦) ⲡⲁϣ ⲡⲉ ϣⲁϥⲇⲟⲕⲓⲙⲁⲍⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲗⲁⲓ̈ⲛ ϩⲛ̅ ⲡⲟϣⲙⲉϥ: ⲧⲁⲓ̈ ⲧⲉ ⲑⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲏⲣⲡ̅ ⲉϣⲁϥⲇⲟⲕⲓⲙⲁⲍⲉ ⲙ̅ⲫⲏⲧ ⲙ̅ⲡϫⲁⲥⲓϩⲏⲧ ϩⲛ̅ ⲡⲙⲓϣⲉ. (26) The furnace proveth the edge by dipping: so doth wine the hearts of the proud by drunkenness.
(ⲗ︦) ⲟⲩⲙ̅ⲧⲟⲛ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲏⲣⲡ̅ ϩⲛ̅ ⲡⲁϩⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲉⲕϣⲁⲛⲥⲟⲟϥ ϩⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲣⲱϣⲉ: ⲁϣ ⲧⲉ ⲧⲙⲟⲧⲛⲉⲥ ⲙ̅ⲡⲉⲧⲉ ⲛϥ̅ⲥⲉ ⲏⲣⲡ̅ ⲁⲛ; ϫⲉ ⲛ̅ⲧⲟϥ ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁⲩⲥⲟⲛⲧϥ̅ ⲉⲩⲟⲩⲛⲟϥ ⲛ̅ⲣ̅ⲣⲱⲙⲉ. (27) Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately: what life is then to a man that is without wine? for it was made to make men glad.
(ⲗ︦ⲁ︦) ⲟⲩⲧⲉⲗⲏⲗ ⲛ̅ϩⲏⲧ ⲙⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲟⲩⲛⲟϥ ⲙ̅ⲯⲩⲭⲏ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲏⲣⲡ̅ ⲉⲕϣⲁⲛⲥⲟⲟϥ. .... ⲣⲱϣⲉ ⲛ̅ⲡⲉⲟⲩⲟⲉⲓϣ. (28) Wine measurably drunk and in season bringeth gladness of the heart, and cheerfulness of the mind:
(ⲗ︦ⲃ︦) ... ϣⲉ ⲛ̅ⲟⲩⲯⲩⲭⲏ ⲡⲉ ⲥⲉ ⲟⲩⲏⲣⲡ̅ ⲉⲛⲁϣⲱϥ. (29) But wine drunken with excess maketh bitterness of the mind, with brawling and quarrelling.
(ⲗ︦ⲅ︦) ϣⲁⲣⲉ ⲡϯϩⲉ ⲧⲁϣⲉ ⲡϭⲱⲛⲧ̅ ⲙ̅ⲡⲁⲑⲏⲧ ⲉⲩϫⲣⲟⲡ ⲛⲁϥ ϩⲛ̅ ⲟⲩϫⲟⲕϫⲕ̅ ⲙⲛ̅ ⲟⲩϩⲧⲟⲡ ⲉϥⲧⲥ̅ⲃⲕⲟ ⲛ̅ⲧϭⲟⲙ ⲉϥⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙ̅ⲡⲡⲱⲗϩ̅. (30) Drunkenness increaseth the rage of a fool till he offend: it diminisheth strength, and maketh wounds.
(ⲗ︦ⲇ︦) ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ϫⲡⲓⲉ ⲡⲉⲧϩⲓⲧⲟⲩⲱⲕ ϩⲛ̅ ⲟⲩⲙⲁ ⲛ̅ⲥⲉⲏⲣⲡ̅ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲥⲟϣϥϥ̅ ϩⲙ̅ ⲡⲉϥⲟⲩⲛⲟϥ. (31) Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth:
(ⲗ︦ⲉ︦) ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ϫⲓ ⲟⲩϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲁϥ ⲛ̅ⲛⲟϭⲛⲉϭ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲙ̅ⲡⲣ̅ⲑⲗⲓⲃⲉ ⲙ̅ⲙⲟϥ ⲉϣⲁⲧϥ̅. give him no despiteful words, and press not upon him with urging him to drink.
